8/28: Using Manual Controls In-camera

In class we will cover:

  1. Discussion of camera controls, including ISO, shutter speed and aperture.
  2. Discussion of compositional strategies:
    Rule of 3rds
    Symmetry
    Repeating Forms
    Diagonal Lines
    Pattern
    Long depth of field and Short depth of field
  3. Class discussion of applications of compositional strategies in the work of contemporary artists
  4. Introduce assignment 1: Compositional Strategies
  5. Take a look at your cameras / check-in with students still needing cameras.

HOMEWORK:

  2. Complete the Simulator assignment

Simulator Assignment: due by noon on 8/30.

Test the simulator and make three images with long, medium, and short depth of field. Screen shot your work for each of the three images. Besure to label which image has short, medium, and long depth of field so that I know you understand the difference. Bring your screenshots to class.

Notice aperture and shutter speed work in combination to cerate the appropriate exposure. How does adjusting shutter speed impacts the blur on the plane propeller?

We will review your work in our next class. Write down any questions that you have.

Compositional Strategies, contact sheet due 9/13

Select a category: People, Places, or Things.

Create 25 distinct photographs of your topic. Each subject or thing that you photograph should be explored from three different angles of view, so you will be turning in 75 frames total. As you work, make at least one photograph that uses every compositional strategy discussed in class. Images due September 13. Bring your memory card to class with the images that you’ve shot.

Week 3: Camera Set-up Workshop

9/4, Labor Day, no class

9/6, We will continue to discuss camera mechanics, set up your cameras, and go outside to shoot together as a class.

HOMEWORK:
1. Complete long depth of field/short depth of field exercise. Bring three examples of the same composition shot using short and long depth of field to our next class.

2. Begin shooting for Assignment 1: Compositional Strategies, contact sheet due 9/13

Week 1: Seeing Through Pictures

Welcome class! Below you will find some useful links. In class, we covered: class introductions, syllabus review, and introduction some of the skills we will be learning in the class. We also discussed some of the supplies you’ll need for the class.

Materials to Purchase or Acquire • Art 218

  1. Camera: A working digital camera with manual 
    controls. Please see me for suggestions. Your camera will need a memory card. I’d suggest one that is at least 64gb, but if you have a smaller one already you can use it.
  2. Canon Pro Paper Luster
    (8.5×11”, 50 sheets) ($25)
    Purchase from B&H Photo or Adorama
  3. An external hard drive with at least 1TB of memory. I suggest a Samsung Solid State Drive. They are around $60 on B&H. You may want to buy two. REMEMBER TO BACK UP!

HOMEWORK:

Locate a camera to use in the class. Please bring your camera to our next class.
